Koki Tanaka is a 26 year old 3rd year Doctor of Musical Arts student, studying with Mikhail Kopelman at the Eastman School of Music. Koki received Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Washington and Master of Music degree from Eastman School of Music.
Koki started playing the violin at age 6 in Japan with his teacher, Tamiko Kojima. While he was still in Japan, at age 9, Koki was accepted to play in the Children and Professional Orchestra Concert. At age 12, he moved to the U.S. and studied with Hsuan (Tony) Lee and Ronald Patterson. Koki also studied with Lynn Blakeslee and Renée Jolles at Eastman School of Music.
In 2003, Koki was accepted into the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra and played there for five years until his high school graduation. In the summer of 2004, Koki was invited to participate in the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music: Summer String Academy. There he studied with Raquel Castro. In the summer of 2007, Koki was invited to participate in the ENCORE School for Strings hosted by the Cleveland Institute of Music where he studied with David Russell. In 2008 summer, Koki was invited to the Marrowstone Music Festival as a Fellowship student. In 2009 summer, he participated in Zephyr: International Chamber Music Course and Festival in Italy, hosted by the San Francisco Conservatory of Music.
Also in 2007, Koki won top awards at the Performing Arts Festival of Eastside (PAFE) and the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra Concerto Competition. He played his concerto at Benaroya Hall in Seattle with the Seattle Youth Symphony Orchestra under conductor, Stephen Rogers Radcliffe. In 2008, Koki won the Bellevue Philharmonic Orchestra Young Artist Debut Competition and played with the Bellevue Philharmonic at Meydenbauer Center in Bellevue, Washington under conductor Fusao Kajima. Koki was selected as the one of the finalists of the University of Washington’s School of Music annual Concerto Competition, two consecutive years. He also participated in a master class taught by Elisa Barston, violinist with the Seattle Symphony, Gil Shaham, Frank Almond, and Leon Fleisher in chamber music master class. In 2016, Koki participated in a videoconference Master Class presented by Sibelius Academy, taught by Kaija Saarikettu.
Koki participated in many University of Washington band concerts under the direction of Timothy Saltzman and Vu Nguyen. Koki is also one of the first prize winners of the 2010 University of Washington Strings and Piano Chamber Ensemble Competition, as part of the Quantum String Quartet. The Quantum has given numerous performances, including playing for the American String Project, an appearance at Café Racer’s Racer Sessions led by trumpeter Cuong Vu, and a concert with San Francisco Symphony Principal Bass Scott Pingel in the Barry Lieberman and Friends series, The Quantum’s own recital in March, 2011, and in the University of Washington Contemporary Group concert.
Koki has been giving recitals annually at Eastman School of Music, as well as at George Eastman House’s Annual Concert Series. Koki is an active chamber music performer and enjoys
